Humour story: Toronto Maple Leafs

All of these Maple Leafs fans make me laugh. The sea of blue will always stand firmly behind the Toronto Maple Laughs. But, why?

Every National Hockey League season is like the great depression for the city of Toronto. I would love to know what they put in the water. Whatever it is, it appears to keep fans delusional and the players lazy.

However, this year is special. Leafs fans have plenty to cheer about this season. Toronto is currently in last place in the NHL standings. They are the worst team in the league statistically. A flock of seagulls are more intimidating than this flock of hockey players. So, why are the Leafs so excited?

Toronto fans always insist “there is always next year.” This particular statement is backed up by more potential this year than the past nine years. The Maple Leafs have 12 NHL draft picks organized for the 2016 draft. Unless they select the 12 greatest hockey players of all-time, the Leafs might find themselves in the exact same position next season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded most of their older, highly-paid players with hopes to replace them with young and fresh talent. In February, four Leafs players scored their first NHL goal. Toronto management have made bold moves behind the scenes, but the updated Toronto roster are yet to make a big splash in the hockey pool.

With a 26-35-11 record, the Toronto Maple Leafs are not exactly reaching for the stars. The hockey club appears to be plummeting to the bottom of the standings intentionally. If Toronto finishes in dead last, they have a better selection for the 2016 NHL draft.

While these other NHL teams battle for a championship, the Maple Leafs are hiding in a dark corner and counting their draft picks. Trading hockey superstars like Dion Phaneuf, Phil Kessel, and James Reimer has given some rookies a chance in the spotlight. Now, the Leafs just need some talented pairs of feet to fit these skates.

The Toronto Maple Leafs fans have been slapped in the face by reality this season. They have finally learned “there isn’t always next year.” Not until you take the proper steps towards creating a powerful team with a talented roster.

Many Leafs fans are hoping the team can get their hands on some rising stars in the minor leagues in this year's NHL draft. Fingers are crossed, but nobody is holding their breath.
